Abbys

I love when Andrew asks me to come to Abbys with him.

That's where we keep a handful of horses off of the farm at Andrew's Aunt Abby's land.   This is also where my baby Belle has been for the past year.  I love any chance I get to go snuggle and give her kisses on her soft horse nose.

It also means that I get to walk on the train tracks.  I hear this is very illegal...so kids..don't do it.  But it makes me feel like a wayfarin' stranger.  Just me and my love with no place to call home.  Just walkin' down the train track, runnin' from the law.

And at some point on the tracks we cross over and our friends are waiting for us.

I think I had a one horse eating my foot and one eating my hair.  Little rascals.
If you ever have a bad day, just call me up and you can come chat with these guys.  Instant happiness.  They don't even care what you look like or if you have on your stinky old Uggs that are 5 years old.

That's one big dandelion, people.

And here's some music for your little ears today.  Yes.  It is official.  I can't stop listening to Gillian Welch.  I just want to find my very own David Rawlings and life would be complete.

Happy Thursday :)

Lady, aka "Grandma"

Yesterday I got a call at work.
Lady, or Grandma as most everyone at the farm called her, had laid down in the riding ring and it didn't look like she was going to get up this time.

Lady was 37 years old which is VERY old in horse years. Andrew's mom has had her longer than both of her children. She was the first horse that Andrew rode and the first horse that he fell off of. Needless to say, Lady is a member of the Crummett family and loved by everyone at the barns.

Lady walked around doing whatever she pleased in her last years. She earned that freedom. You would often find her waiting by the feed room in hopes that someone would give her a little extra grain. Or you would find her scratching her belly on a bush. I think the most important thing that Lady did in her later years was care for all of the foals and their mothers. Lady was the only horse that a new mama would let around her baby. It was really incredible to watch. She was a Grandma in every way possible.

Horses are just not horses at our barn. They are part of our community and many are part of our family. Yesterday was sad for everyone. I have never been around such a large animal at the end of it's life. You could really feel her spirit leave as she took her last few breathes. But we know she was ready to go. It was time and we are all grateful that she went without suffering.

Rest in peace Grandma, it just won't be the same around here without you.

It's rainy here.

In attempts to lift rainy spirits, here are some pictures from Andrew's mom's rose bush that I took on Sunday.

And this is Grandma- A.K.A Lady. She is the 30 + year old mare that wanders around the farm, doing as she pleases. It's only now becoming normal to look outside the window and see a horse grazing on the front yard.
Grandma pretty much rules the roost around here. She's a doll.

I'm off to practice for awhile. Got lot's of music on my mind. :)
Happy Monday!
